49ers Sign WRs Collie and Hawkins

The 49ers came to terms with free agent wide receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins Thursday, according to various reports.

The 49ers, looking to patch together a group of wide receivers before the start of the regular season, signed Austin Collie Friday, according Mike Gatafolo of Fox Sports 1.

But they weren't done, also inking Lavelle Hawkins to add to the mix, a team source confirmed. Both come to the team on one-year deals.

Five of San Francisco's wideouts have missed practices over the last week while dealing with various injuries, leaving Marlon Moore and Chad Hall to get the majority of reps opposite Anquan Boldin during training camp.

Since Michael Crabtree torn his Achilles tendon during OTAs, the team has looked for internal options to try and replace its top receiver from 2012. But hamstring injuries to Kyle Williams and A.J. Jenkins have shelved them for almost a week. And rookie Quinton Patton has been unable to catch passes since the start of camp while dealing with a jammed finger, although he has participated.

Kassim Osgood is also out while Mario Manningham continues to rehab from a torn ACL suffered in November's loss to the Seahawks.

Collie brings a significant injury history with him to San Francisco. The team worked him out in June but he wasn't completely healed from a patella tendon surgery that ended his 2012 season after just one game.

The four-year veteran has a bad history of concussions ranging from 2010 to the preseason last year. He played in 45 of the Colts' 69 games while he was in Indianapolis.

Collie's best season came in as a rookie in 2009 when he caught 60 balls for 676 yards and seven touchdowns with Peyton Manning at the helm. En route to winning the Super Bowl, Collie had two touchdowns in the playoffs and a seven-catch, 123-yard performance in the 30-17 win in the AFC Championship game against the New York Jets.

Hawkins - a former Cal Bear - has appeared in 52 games for the Tennessee Titans since getting drafted in the fourth round in 2008. His only double-digit reception year was 2011 when he caught 47 passes for 470 yards and a score. Hawkins was signed by the Patriots in March before getting released Wednesday.

To make room on the roster, the 49ers waived reserve center Sherman Carter and punter Colton Schmidt.
