Giants add QB depth, sign Rusty Smith

The New York Giants continue to add depth behind starting quarterback Eli Manning this offseason as Rusty Smith became the newest member of Big Blue this week.

The Giants recently picked up FA Rusty Smith, yet another quarterback addition to their already QB-heavy roster.

With starter Eli Manning still recovering from arthroscopic ankle surgery, it seems as if the Giants want a different quarterback for every day of camp. With Curtis Painter, Ryan Nassib, and Josh Freeman already on the roster, competition for the backup quarterback position looks to be intense.

Drafted out of Florida Atlantic in the 6th round by the Tennessee Titans, Smith was coming off a prolific college career. In four seasons with the Owls, he set school records with 768 completions, 10,112 passing yards, and 76 total touchdowns. His performance led Florida Atlantic to their first bowl appearance, in which Smith threw five touchdowns to set a New Orleans Bowl record and was named MVP.

The following year, Smith returned as the 2007 Sun Belt Player of the Year and FAU record holder for single season touchdowns. He continued to shine as Florida Atlantic had another exceptional season. Smith and FAU capped off the year with a 24-21 win in the 2008 Motor City Bowl, in which Smith was named offensive MVP.

As the four-year backup QB for the Titans, Smith barely took the field. With one start and three appearances, Smith completed 23 of 45 passes for 234 total yards and 4 interceptions.

Last year, Smith was waived by the Titans in August and added to their practice squad soon after. He was signed to the active roster but did not play in a single game. Smith became a free agent following the end of the season.

Smith's arrival gives the Giants five quarterbacks. With better options like Josh Freeman and Curtis Painter already on the squad, the Giants seem to be focusing heavily on development. As the Giants usually only take two quarterbacks on to the final roster, maybe this will be the year they make room for a third. Recommended Stories
